PostHeaderIcon Personal Training Clients take on the Trainer

A post with the daily Succeed Fitness Session

Here is me at the end of training

Here is me at the end of training

Well what an absolute cracker of a session this turned out to be…

I had the pleasure of a couple of my Tuggeranong Personal Training clients join me for my latest Crossfit Canberra training session. Turned out to be a gruelling fitness session, one that hurt us all for a few days.

Here is a rundown:

20 x 60kg deadlift, run 400m

20 x 20kg K/B swing, run 400m

20 x tricep bar dips, run 400m

20 x full burpees (chest to ground), run 400m

20 x pull ups, run 400m

20 x 24′ box squat jumps, run 400m

20 x 12kg D/B Squat cleans, run 400m

Times: Scott - 20.50, Emma - 22.29, Tanya - 21.15

A great effort by the girls and they really made me work hard for this one. I have just set the weights that I have lifted please ensure you modify the weights to suit your fitness and skill level. If you are not sure then look up a good personal trainer or crossfit instructor in your area.

No video footage as I was too tired to film anything…

If you are up to it, we are hitting up a Crossfit Canberra session again this Saturday morning at Tuggeranong Town Park 7am sharp.

Cost is $10. Hope to see you there.

PostHeaderIcon How to Avoid Falling off the Wagon Part 1

A post about why it is so hard to stick to a diet

falling-off-the-diet-wagon

Why sticking with your diet is so hard

It is becoming quite evident, we have an obesity problem in Australia and many other countries around the world. Yet, I propose that we do not have a weight loss problem today.

In case you’re confused at this apparent contradiction, consider these statistics:

According to a study from Oxford University published in the International Journal of Obesity, within 3 to 5 ars, about 80 percent of all ‘losers’ have regained the kgs, and often gained back a little more than they started with.

According to research by the National Weight Control Registry, that relapse rate may be as high as 95 percent.

For comparison, relapse rates for drug, alcohol and tobacco dependency have been reported in the range of 50-90%!

Basically this means that many people have lost weight, but not many have managed to keep it off.

Therefore, we don’t have a weight loss problem, we have a “not sticking with it” problem.

Wouldn’t you agree?

In fact, the fall and subsequent regain usually doesn’t take years. Many people have abandoned their new year’s resolutions within weeks. By the time Easter rolls around, the diet is old news and forgotten!

If this is true, then shouldn’t we put more of our attention onto figuring out why you haven’t been sticking with your program, and what you should do about it?

This is exactly what I focus on with my clients. I have also put together this new list of the top 8 reasons why many of you seem to fall off the wagon.

Having a better understanding of the problem, better helps lead you to solutions.

Rather than worrying about all the varied diet plans, like whether you should be on low carb or high carb,  vegetarian or meat eater, I propose that if you focus on these 8 tips in the next blog, you’ll start getting more lasting results on your new easy to follow food program.

By the way I hate the word ‘diet’, you should never call it a ‘diet’. If you have to then is it not the right meal plan for you. It should be easy and something you can stick to for years to come.

How? By being able to stick with whichever plan you decided was best for you! After all, even if you have one of the best nutrition programs in the world (such as the Last Phase Fat Loss Program), it doesn’t do you much good if you can’t stick with it!

Stay tuned for part II and ways to avoid falling off the wagon.

If you have a spare few minutes sit and listen to what some of Australia’s leading Government, media and fitness professionals had to say:

Hey all,

Well after a wonderful trip to the other side of the country attending the 2009 Fitness Australia Business Awards, we are pleased to announce that we have come back with the BIG award.

Yes we have been fortunate enough to again WIN the:

2009 Australian Personal Training Business of the Year

For the second year running we have been fortunate enough to have been judged not only Canberra’s, but Australia’s Best Personal Training Organisation.

We have now won every award available for 2009 and I believe this is a testament to our dedication and passion for helping change as many people’s lives as possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our trainers both past and present and of course our clients.

Without such a wonderful group of friends and clients our organisation would not be where it is today and we are grateful for your support over the last five years.

Check out a clip from the awards night:

sunset

Well it has come to that time where we head off into the sunset for the final awards nights of the year.

We are packing our bags bags and heading to Perth for the 2009 Australian Fitness Business of the Year awards at the beautiful Sheraton Hotel in Perth.

It is set to be a huge evening, with Australia’s best trainers, Personal Training Businesses and the best health clubs in Australia all in attendance to see who can claim the award of Australia’s Best Fitness Business.

I have also been fortunate enough to have been asked to sit an expert panel of members for an open forum on the fitness industry, on where it has come to where it heading.

I am honoured to have been asked as  Australia’s leading Fitness Expert, so a big thank you from me goes out to the Australian government and Fitness Australia  for the opportunity to sit on the panel. I am looking forward to sitting with some of Australia’s leading government officials and Australia’s leading journalists.

We have been fortunate enough to make the finals and we are hoping to be the first company to win this illustrious award two years in a row.

We only got here because of our wonderful staff & clients, so a big thank you to you all.

Wish us luck as we head to the other side of the country for a few days.

P.S. Here is my last cross fit training session I thought you might like to have a go at:

A version of ‘Fight Gone Bad’, which entails picking 5 exercises, each 1 minute in duration, completing as many good reps as possible, x three rounds.

30kg thrusters ( lighter as my knee is just coming good)

Double Unders ( skipping)

Pull Ups

Dips

Rower

So the idea is to add up each round of reps and combime them for a total score.

My score: 284

Certainly not one of my best performances, but a good comeback session that had me close to the bin…

Not sure if I will get back to the blogs this week, I will see you all on the other side ( hopefully with the Australian Personal Training Business of the Year award in my hand).

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a set of specific techniques that deliberately restructure toward positive functioning of the brain’s thinking and the body’s behaviours by aligning the conscious with the unconscious mind and body. NLP offers highly refined tools to take charge of every area of life in the most effective way possible to produce results. It enables individuals to proactively design their physical and emotional responses.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a set of specific techniques that deliberately restructure the brain and the body’s behaviours toward positive function through the alignment of the conscious and unconscious mind and body. NLP offers highly refined tools to take charge of every area of life in the most effective and efficient way possible to produce results. It enables individuals to proactively design their physical and emotional responses and therefore, their results.

The three components of NLP are:

 NEURO

The nervous system’s taking in of life or reality through the five senses

  • Sight (Visual)
  • Sound (Auditory)
  • Touch (Kinaesthetic)
  • Smell (Olfactory)
  • Taste (Gustatory)

Understanding how the body and mind neurology works to better direct it toward more effective thoughts and behaviours.

Creating new neurological pathways that break through mental boundary conditions.

 LINGUISTIC

 Becoming aware of how communication occurs within self and with others;

  • Pictures
  • Sounds
  • Feelings
  • Tastes
  • Smells
  • Internal dialogue

Using language to guide the mind toward change.

Speaking to others within their particular representational system or their model of the world.

 PROGRAMMING

Understanding the mind is like a computer with though patterns as the software and discovering what programs are determining current experience.

Using specific tools and techniques to reprogram, upgrade and install new software for optimal high performance.

Well after 12 weeks of interviews, formal functions and a wonderful trip to Sydney last week, the final award for the Telstra Australian Business of the Year was announced.

Unfortunately Succeed didn’t take home the overall Telstra Australian Buisness of the Year award. Beaten closely by ‘The Coach Program’.

We feel absolutely honoured that from nearly 4000 nominated businesses, to be named in the top seven businesses in our country. Not a bad feat for what started as two man business working in our garages and ovals in Canberra.

Congratulations to all the wonderful businesses that made the finals.

It was fantastic to see a huge range of finalists, ranging form a meat abattoirs in Victoria to motorcycle building company in Tassie to an online tours company in Queensland to a fitness company in Canberra to a vaccine company in South Australia. Well done to all businesses for reaching the pinnacle of Australian business.

We would also like to thank all of our past and present clients and staff for their support over the last four years. Without all of you we wouldn’t be were we are today.

PostHeaderIcon The Personal Trainers Training

Only a short post today as I am tired and it is time for bed.

Today I did one of the girls in, Nancy.

My first time attempting this one and surprise, surprise it was another tough one to get through.

I couldn’t match the big guys weights from the American site.

Nancy

400m Run

40kg Overhead Squats ( I only did 25kg)

x 5 sets for time

Time: 16.32

Avg HR: 169

Calories: 298

The Overhead Squat

overhead-squat

Yes, not sure who this is, but she is lifting the full weight of 40kg.

Puts me to shame really, in my defence though I did go full depth on all squats.

A very tough session, but with the correct modified weight, this one will be ok for some of my Personal Training clients.

Stay tuned, for all our Canberra Boot Camp and Personal Training Clients, there is some new programs coming your way soon from the Succeed Team.

PostHeaderIcon My Latest Training Nightmare

Well for the first time in history I have ran under 5 minute km’s.

Wednesday’s session was a 5km time trial, and as you all know I HATE running…. so this session was a drag for me.

I must be getting fitter doing this cross fit. For the first time I have broken the 25 minute mark for 5km.

Time: 24.59 ( yes by 1 second)

Avg HR: 167

Calories: 421

Today saw me do another ‘fight gone bad’ session ( for some reason I love these)…

If you go back to July, you will see my results, but I have smashed my last attempt at ‘Fight Gone Bad’

My score was: 341 ( last score 307)

Avg Hr: 167

Calories: 421

Signs are good that I am actually heading in the right direction on the fitness side of things, with such a big increase in score from a few weeks ago.

I will keep plugging away. I am loving the cardiovascular within the training.

Having a few days away from Canberra, in Wagga at the moment, so I will do a session here tomorrow morning ( see if I can find any takers to join me)….
